Scripture Readings for Sunday
Joshua 24: 1-2; Psalm 34: 2-3, 16-21; Ephesians 5: 25-32; John 6: 60-69
The Church invites us to respond tangibly to the demands of the Gospel, which are the demands of our Christian faith. Our faith must always reflect concrete positions that inspire others to follow the Lord. In today's first reading, Joshua demands that the people of Israel make a choice to either profess their faith before the God who freed them from slavery or choose other gods. Their answer is clear: "we ... will serve the Lord, for he is our God." Jesus goes on to affirm that the Spirit, not the flesh, brings life. He demands from his disciples a response many cannot give and, instead, they abandon him. His apostles trust and follow him. Today the Church invites us to be clear and transparent in all aspects of our faith, doctrine, moral life, and charity.
First Reading: Joshua told the Israelites they were to decide whom they would serve: the Amorite gods or the Lord who brought them out of Egypt. They agreed to "serve the LORD, for he is our God."
Second Reading: Paul likened the love of a husband and wife to the love Christ has for the church. As Christ loves the church, so should husbands and wives love each other.
Gospel: Jesus' disciples were puzzled by his words. Jesus reminded them, "It is the spirit that gives life, while the flesh is of no avail." Simon Peter responded, "You have the words of eternal life."
